Getting an Amnio: Spetember 11, 2006

It was recomended that we go ahead and get an amniocentesis since heart defects are often linked to genetic disorders. The procedure wasn't bad, but the high-risk OB was a total jerk. The good news is I never have to see him again since I will be set up with the high-risk OBs at The Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania which is adjacent to CHOP. That way I can be with Abby within an hour of her birth.

We got all the results from the amnio this week and it was all clear. Yay! At least we don't have to worry about any genetic problems. Plus, they confirmed that she is for sure a girl.

Our next step is an appointment on October 16 at CHOP where we will meet the high-risk OB, get yet another fetal echo, meet with the cardiologists (again) and we finally meet Dr. Tom Spray who will be Abby's surgeon. It's going to be a long day, but look for our next update then.

So glad that you found Tom's website. If you haven't discovered it yet, check out tchin.org This organization provides wonderful support for CHD families and you can connect on-line with hundreds of other HLHS families if you choose. Tom just had his 7th birthday and continues to do well. He had his annual check-up with the pediatrician yesterday and he looked at me and said, "He's just so NORMAL!". He is working above grade level in all areas, has lots of friends, is enjoying Cub Scouts, t-ball and Odyssey of the Mind. I hope you are finding lots of stories like Tom's to get you through this time of waiting.

Alison,

I am so happy to hear that the amnio came back all clear! As I mentioned before to you, my high-risk OB has said that there is a world of difference between 1 issue and multiple issues, and if your baby's only problem is her heart, that is great news indeed. I am looking forward to hearing how your appointment on the 16th goes!

We are almost in same boat as you are. We were going to goto Boston to get Fetal Ballon Aortic Valve Dialation. But they said that we can get that done when baby is born.

I hope everything works out good for you.
